Unit 2

Disability Issues, Problems and Responses 10 hrs

Societal attitude toward Persons with Disability (PWD): Stigma, Discrimination, oppression and social exclusion. Issues of access to education, employment, health, technology; safety and accessibility; marginalization and psychosocial challenges. Integration and Inclusion of the persons with disability: prospects and challenges. Responses: Special Provisions; Inclusive Education and Employment; Mainstreaming.

Unit 3

Policy, Legal Framework, Services and Programmes: 10 hrs

United Nations Convention on Rights of Person with Disabilities. Various legislations (RCI Act, RPD Act & National Trust Act). Services and programmes for Persons with Disabilities: Role of government and civil society. Disability Counseling: Components and Approaches Gendered aspects of disability.

Unit 4

Rehabilitation of Persons with Disability: 10 hrs

Rehabilitation services for the PWD (Educational, vocational, economic & social). Community based rehabilitation: Philosophy approaches and programmes. Roles and functions of Social Worker with Disabilities. Theoretical Perspectives and their Application to Disability Rehabilitation in Social Work.

Unit 5

Assistive Technology and Disability: 5 hrs

Introduction to Assistive Technology. Cognitive assistance, including computer and electrical assistive devices. Infrastructural assistance Devices for effective communication

Course Objectives:

This course aims to:

1. COB1: Provide foundational knowledge on disability concepts, definitions, types, and models of understanding disability.
2. COB2: Develop understanding of disability-related issues, societal attitudes, stigma, discrimination, and challenges to inclusion.
3. COB3: Familiarize students with national and international disability laws, rights frameworks, and service/programme provisions.
4. COB4: Equip learners with knowledge of rehabilitation approaches, theoretical perspectives, and the role of social workers in disability settings.
5. COB5: Introduce the use and relevance of assistive technologies in enhancing independence and communication for persons with disabilities.

Course Outcomes:

1. CO1: Explain disability concepts, definitions, types, and models, including the evolution of disability in India.
2. CO2: Analyze issues, challenges, and societal responses such as stigma, discrimination, exclusion, and prospects for inclusion.
3. CO3: Evaluate disability policies, legal frameworks, rights-based legislations, services, and programmes available to persons with disabilities.
4. CO4: Apply rehabilitation perspectives, approaches, and social work roles in educational, vocational, social, and community-based rehabilitation settings.
5. CO5: Describe and assess the role of assistive technologies in promoting communication, independence, and accessibility for persons with disabilities.
