Objectives

When starting on a Ph. D. or even later in the Ph. D. thesis writing trajectory, we struggle to find appropriate literature, write a literature review and to make the transition from a general research interest to a clearly defined and doable research question.

This mini-workshop focuses on how to conduct a literature review and how define a research question. In this workshop, we will learn some tools about the following:

  • How to find literature and write a literature review
  • How to build our research on the basis of the theory
  • How to define and refine a research question

This workshop welcomes Ph.D. researchers in social science and management. It will take place on the beautiful Amritapuri campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.

Evaluation

Full attendance at all modules on both days is required to obtain the participation certificate.

Application Process

Interested Ph.D. scholars should register online (and submit the required documents) no later than January 15, 2020. The number of participants will be limited to ensure interaction and learning. The coordinators and host institutions will conduct the selection among the applicants. Please include the following documents with your application:

  • Applicant’s curriculum vitae.
  • One-page description of his/her (doctoral) research or intended area of research, indicating the general objectives.

Accommodation

Simple dormitory-style accommodation may be reserved at the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. The accommodation consists of shared rooms with at most two additional members of the same gender sharing the same room and toilet facilities. The cost of these accommodations for the duration of the workshop is included for participants from host institutions.

Participants will be selected based on application materials. Please note that a maximum of 25 applications will be accepted. Applications will close once this number is reached. The final deadline for applications is January 15, 2020.

How to Reach

Directions to Arrive at the Campus from the North

By Air and Taxi: Cochin (Kochi) International Airport at Nedumbassery is situated 140 kilometers north of the campus. One can ask for a pre-paid taxi to Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri. The taxi-ride takes about three hours.

By Train: Kayamkulam is the closest train station situated 12 kilometers north of the campus. After disembarking, one can hire an autorickshaw to come to the campus. The ride takes about 20 minutes. Buses are also available from Kayamkulam Bus-Stand to Vallickavu Junction, which is about a five-minute walk from the campus.

By Bus: From the Ernakulam Transport Bus-Stand, one may board a bus going towards Trivandrum via Alappuzha, and alight at Ochira. From Ochira, an autorickshaw can be taken to bring one directly to Amritapuri, which is 6 km away from Ochira. Or one may board a bus going to Vallickavu Junction, which is about a five-minute walk from the campus.

Directions to Arrive at the Campus from the South

By Air and Taxi: The closest airport is Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram), located 110 kilometers south of Amritapuri. One can ask for a pre-paid taxi to Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri. The taxi-ride takes about three hours.

By Train: Karunagapally is the closest train station situated 10 kilometers south of the campus. After disembarking, one can hire an autorickshaw to come to the campus. The ride takes about 20 minutes. The bus service is also available from Karunagapally.

By Bus: From the Trivandrum Transport Bus-Stand, one may board a bus going towards Ernakulam via Kollam and alight at Karunagappally. From Karunagappally, a bus going to Vallickavu Junction can be taken, which is about a five-minute walk from the campus.
