Bio

Dr. Saurabh Sharma is an environmental historian and interdisciplinary researcher specialising in Indian Knowledge Systems, water history, socio-hydrology, and society and sustainability. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Amrita Darshanam, ICSS, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Bengaluru. Dr. Sharma completed his doctoral research at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, where his dissertation critically examined indigenous water management systems in Central India and traced the long-term socio-ecological consequences of colonial hydrological interventions. His research integrates archival methods, historical ethnography, oral narratives, and GIS-based spatial analysis to bridge historical inquiry with contemporary sustainability policy.

His scholarly contributions include publications in reputed Scopus and Web of Science-indexed journals, including Physics and Chemistry of the Earth and the Indian Journal of History of Science. His monograph is titled Sustainable Water Solutions for Drought-Prone Bundelkhand in India: A Retrospective Study, to be published in the Sustainability Solutions series, Springer Nature.

His current research focuses on the revival of pre-colonial water technologies for drought-prone regions, the decolonisation of water governance frameworks, and the integration of Indian Knowledge Systems into national sustainability policy — with a broader vision of demonstrating that indigenous ecological wisdom holds transformative relevance for twenty-first century water challenges.
