The Onam celebration at Amrita College of Nursing on 3rd September 2025, themed “Thimirthonam”, was a vibrant and memorable occasion that brought together students, faculty, and guests in the true spirit of unity and festivity.
The day began in the morning with a grand Onam procession that set the tone for the celebration. The air was filled with energy as Pulikali performers, in their colourful costumes, captivated the audience, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of the traditional Chenda Melam. Adding to the charm, groups of girls carried Thaalams (decorative flower trays), gracefully representing the cultural richness of Kerala’s Onam traditions. At the entrance of the college, a magnificent Athapookkalam was created, drawing admiration from everyone with its intricate design and vibrant colours, marking the heart of the celebration.
As the morning progressed, the cultural programs commenced in the basement which was beautifully decorated for the occasion, with a prayer, followed by the Principal addressing the gathering and officially marking the beginning of the events. The stage came alive with performances that reflected the essence of Onam. Melodious festive songs filled the hall, followed by the elegant Thiruvathira performed by both students and faculty members, displaying the traditional art form with grace and rhythm.
The cultural showcase not only highlighted the creativity and talents of the participants but also brought out the deep cultural heritage of the festival. The function was further elevated by the presence of Swami Nijamritanandapuri ji, whose inspiring words blessed the occasion. Several other dignitaries also graced the event, adding to the grandeur and significance of the celebration.
Following the cultural programs, the most anticipated part of Onam, the Onasadya, was served. The traditional vegetarian feast was enjoyed by all, creating a spirit of togetherness as everyone dined in harmony, relishing the authentic flavours of Kerala cuisine. The joyous atmosphere continued into the afternoon with engaging traditional games. The highlight was the Tug of War competition held between different student batches, which created much excitement and laughter, bringing a spirited close to the festivities.
The Onam celebration at Amrita College of Nursing was thus a grand success, beautifully blending tradition, togetherness, and joy. From the procession and cultural programs to the Onasadya and traditional games, every moment resonated with the festival’s message of unity, prosperity, and happiness, leaving behind cherished memories for all who took part in the celebration.
