Abstract : Broadcasting is envisioned to be a vital technology that will govern the behavior and analysis of vehicular networks. Since the topology of VANETs is subject to rapid changes, an efficient utilization of the broadcasting technology can easily help in conveying the location information of the vehicles as well as for the purpose of avoiding accidents. This work, with an emphasis on the broadcasting of emergency messages in a multi-hop broadcasting scenario, studies the characteristics of broadcasting delay in a vehicular ad hoc network by means of simulations for various network scenarios. The broadcasting delay is evaluated and simulated for the following scenarios - sparse networks, freeway scenario and cluster-based networks, which compensate for the short-comings in a freeway scenario. The effect of variation in the ZOR was also observed. Finally, the cluster based model was incorporated in the freeway scenario and its resulting effect on the delay behavior was observed.
