Cost-Effective Way of Making Piped Drinking Water Distribution Sustainable in Rural Areas

Abstract : In the rural areas of India, water supply projects often face issues related to improper distribution, where water is supplied based on population rather than actual need. This issue leads to over-supply or under-supply of water in various areas. To address this issue, an IoT-based system is developed, which monitors and regulates water distribution in a sustainable and data-driven manner. Using Arduino, YFS-201 flow sensors, DC water pumps, and ultrasonic sensors, a prototype was built to gather water consumption data from different villages. This data was used to construct a larger model comprising a distribution unit, backup tanks, and main tanks to ensure water is distributed according to the actual needs of the people. The collected data is analyzed to adjust daily water supply accurately, which can be monitored via Microsoft Excel's Data Streamer. The project provides a scalable approach to ensuring sustainable and efficient water management in rural areas.
