Abstract : This paper introduces a simplified ground plane for coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed monopole antennas. The ground plane is a right isosceles triangle which is found to preserve the monopole characteristics with appreciable gain. A prototype of the monopole operating around 2.45 GHz is realized and tested initially. This antenna offers a 2:1 VSWR bandwidth of 260 MHz with approximately 2 dBi gain and omnidirectional pattern. The proposed antenna is modified to achieve dual band characteristics by allowing the ground plane to be asymmetric. Antenna characteristics optimized by simulation are validated using Vector Network Analyser. The prototype has resonance around 2.5 GHz and 5.4 GHz with a gain of approximately 2.2 dBi and 4.6 dBi respectively providing omnidirectional characteristics at both frequencies.
