Abstract : A novel technique for accurately detecting the geometrical shapes for use in machine vision is described. The technique of shape detection is based on tangential exclusively-OR residue method. A tangent is a straight line that touches a curve at only a single point. Any number of tangent lines can be joined to form a closed geometric shape. A circle can fit inside any closed geometric shape. When that circle is enlarged and exclusively-ORed with the geometric shape, residue will be produced at the point of intersection of the tangents forming the geometrical shape. The number of residue components characterizes the geometric shape, thereby detecting the shape.
