Abstract : Fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (FCNPs) are considered as best candidate for a myriad of applications, like bioimaging, drug delivery, sensing, and catalysis owing to its biocompatibility and intrinsic fluorescence (FL) characteristics. The ability of these materials in conjugating with biomolecules make them ideal for biological systems. To determine the physical and chemical properties of FCNPs various characterization techniques are highly required. Spectroscopic techniques such as UV-Vis absorption, FL emission, photoluminescence etc. can be used to determine the optical properties of FCNPs. Microscopic methods such as TEM, SEM, and AFM can be used to investigate the morphology and size of FCNPs. FTIR and Raman spectroscopic techniques helps in the chemical characterization of FCNPs. These characterization techniques are highly inevitable in confirming the formation and deciding the functional applications of FCNPs. Hence this chapter tires to give a detailed overview on the spectroscopic and microscopic characterization of FCNPs which are used as a tool for characterizing its properties.
