The Radiology department in Amrita is a pioneer in India in providing the full spectrum of image guided interventions.

The fellow will be supervised and trained by a team of highly experienced faculty. We perform all form of image guided biopsies, drainages, PTBD and Embolization. The department is a pioneer and leading centre for HCC treatment in the country. The fellow will benefit from our rich experience in thermal ablation, TACE and TARE.

The IR unit offers specialized treatment to patients undergoing liver transplantations and is a critical factor in Amrita`s success as a leading transplant unit of the country. We routinely perform TIPSS, BORTO and other vascular procedure in Cirrhosis and Budd Chiari Patients.

Prostate artery embolization is a new procedure we offer. Uterine artery embolization for fibroids is also performed routinely. Chyle (lymph) leak is a rare and difficult-to-treat disease which affects both adults and children. Our department is a pioneer in treatment of this disease.

The department experience over the last two decades has been published in several national and international journals. We have trained many young interventional radiologists who now offer these services in other parts of the country.
Interventional Radiology is a subspecialty of Radiology which deals with minimally invasive procedures that are performed under image guidance. These procedures can be diagnostic or therapeutic and are carried out with the help of ultrasound fluoroscopic and CT equipment.

Admission Process

A suitable candidate will have appropriate post graduate degree in the field of radiology. Masters or DNB recognised by the MCI will be preferred. Post qualification experience in radiology is not a pre-requisite. Interest in research and publication is desirable.

Admission to the fellowship will be based on a department level interview of eligible candidates, followed by an interview with the Medical Director of only short listed candidates.

  • On call duty rotation for Senior residents in the general pool

The fellow is expected to achieve competence at every level of patient care in the speciality appropriate for starting independent practice.

Final Evaluation and Assessment:

The fellow will be evaluated on a daily basis by the attending staff and will meet regularly with the fellowship supervisor for face-to-face feedback.

There will be a practical examination at the end of the one year program consisting of four case scenarios and discussion. The total marks is 100 and an aggregate 50% is required for pass.

The fellow is expected to complete a clinical research project and submit it for publication in a peer reviewed journal to become eligible for final award of the course certificate.

Training Objectives and Expectations

One-Year Interventional Radiology Fellowship

At the end of one year the candidate will be well acquainted with the current literature on relevant aspects of the basic, investigative, clinical and vascular and non-vascular interventional radiological sciences.

Provide clear, concise, and informative reports that are clinically relevant. They will notify referring clinicians of urgent and emergent findings in a timely fashion and document appropriately. 
Become proficient in the use of picture archiving computer systems (PACS), online clinical document system, and other computer-based modalities. Demonstrate professional behavior at all times, adhering to ethical principles and demonstrating sensitivity. Senior Residents will be cognizant and respectful of patient confidentiality. Fellows will be paid stipend during the one year training period and there is no fees for this program
