Sustainable Livelihoods in the Blue Economy

AMMACHI Labs is conducting pilot studies on Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) and seaweed cultivation as part of its sustainable livelihoods initiative in the blue economy. These projects train coastal communities, particularly women, in climate-smart aquaculture practices. The Seaweed Cultivation Training Project, launched in January 2023, empowers women’s groups through Amrita’s integrated vocational training model. Pilot IMTA studies are underway in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, with plans to expand to Andhra Pradesh. These initiatives combine scientific research with community empowerment, promoting environmental conservation and economic sustainability.

Key goals:

  • Train women in sustainable aquaculture and seaweed farming
  • Create alternative income sources for coastal communities
  • Promote climate-smart practices that protect marine ecosystems
  • Build capacity through hands-on vocational training
  • Support environmental conservation alongside economic growth
