Scalable binder-free one pot hydrothermal synthesis of 2D flower-like Bi2WO6 nanoparticles for high performance supercapacitor application

Abstract : A scalable, binder-free hydrothermal route was developed to synthesize novel 2D flower-like bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) nanoparticles (NPs) with high yield for cost-effective and eco-friendly supercapacitor electrodes. The structural, morphological, and electrochemical characteristics of the prepared Bi2WO6 NPs were systematically described. The electrochemical performance was assessed using cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) analyses. A significant specific capacitance of 375 F/g was obtained for the Bi2WO6 electrode at a scan rate of 10 mV/s. It also demonstrated exceptional cycling stability, retaining 89.5 % of its initial capacitance after 5000 GCD cycles. Low solution resistance (0.2 Ω) and charge-transfer resistance (0.86 Ω) obtained from EIS measurements suggest effective ion transport and fast charge-transfer kinetics. After 8000 charge-discharge cycles, the Bi2WO6//AC hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) maintained 83.3 % of its initial capacitance, exhibiting exceptional long-term cycling stability. It delivered a power density of 2496 W/kg and an excellent energy density of 21.5 Wh/kg. Owing to their outstanding capacitance, excellent discharge capability, and long-term stability, the flower-like Bi2WO6 nanostructures are promising candidates for advanced, binder-free electrodes in high-performance supercapacitors.
