“Engineering education today extends beyond technical expertise; it is about integrating innovation, interdisciplinary knowledge, and values to create solutions that are intelligent, sustainable, and socially responsible.”

The School of Engineering at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Chennai Campus, established in 2019, is a dynamic academic and research ecosystem committed to excellence in engineering education, innovation, and societal impact. The School brings together four key departmentsMechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Science and Humanities, and Amritadarshanam (International Centre for Spiritual Studies)—creating a unique learning environment that integrates strong technical foundations with interdisciplinary thinking and human values.

Guided by the vision of Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, which emphasizes education as a means to combine knowledge with compassion and responsibility, the School strives to nurture engineers who are not only technically competent but also socially conscious and value-driven.

The School offers a comprehensive portfolio of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across core and emerging engineering domains. These include B.Tech programmes in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Computer and Communication Engineering, along with an M.Tech programme in VLSI DesignPhD programmes are offered across a wide range of domains and multiple specializations spanning key STEM areas, fostering advanced research and interdisciplinary innovation.

The academic framework builds strong fundamentals in engineering sciences while integrating emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Internet of Things, Cyber Security, Semiconductor Technologies, Smart Manufacturing, and Sustainable Engineering. The Department of Science and Humanities plays a crucial role in strengthening analytical thinking, mathematical foundations, scientific understanding, and communication skills, enabling students to effectively engage with complex engineering problems.

Students are trained in design, analysis, simulation, and system-level integration through a balanced blend of theoretical rigor and hands-on learning. Project-based learning, open-ended problem-solving, and capstone design experiences foster innovation, critical thinking, and adaptability.

A key strength of the School lies in its strong academic and research foundation, driven by a highly qualified faculty, with nearly 100% holding PhDs. A significant proportion of faculty members have earned their doctorates from premier institutions such as IISc, IITs, NITs, and IIITs, along with international exposure, bringing global perspectives and strong research orientation.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is consistently ranked among the top institutions in India in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and is widely recognized for its academic excellence, research impact, and global outlook, further strengthening the academic environment of the School.

The School is supported by advanced laboratories, research centres, and Centres of Excellence across departments. These include facilities in VLSI Design, Embedded Systems, Communication and Signal Processing, Advanced Manufacturing, Robotics and Autonomous Systems, Energy Systems, Computational Mechanics, and Smart Materials. Dedicated centres such as TRISUL, RACE, MCRL, and mFAB, along with domain-focused labs, enable interdisciplinary research, innovation, and industry collaboration.

The strategic location of the Chennai campus provides a significant advantage. Chennai, one of India’s largest industrial and technology hubs, contributes over 35% of the country’s automobile manufacturing and nearly 60% of exports, while Tamil Nadu accounts for about 35% of automotive production and over 40% of exports. The region also hosts strong ecosystems in electronics, semiconductor design, IT, and R&D, offering students valuable exposure through internships, live projects, and industry engagement.

The School actively promotes experiential and research-driven learning through internships, hackathons, innovation challenges, and industry collaborations. A defining feature of the School is its integration of value-based education through the Amritadarshanam Department, where courses in Indian Knowledge Systems, Yoga, and meditation practices such as Integrated Amrita Meditation (IAM) help students develop emotional resilience, ethical grounding, and a balanced perspective.

With a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary learning, research excellence, innovation, and values, the School of Engineering at Amrita Chennai prepares students to address complex challenges across sectors such as manufacturing, electronics, communication, computing, energy, and emerging technologies. Aligned with the vision of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, the School is committed to nurturing competent professionals, innovative researchers, and responsible global citizens who contribute meaningfully to technology and society.
