Abstract :

Exploring and analysing the content, story and flow of the events in a movie is an important field of research. In this study a weighted network model is proposed, which is constructed from three movies. The nodes of the network are the characters of the movie and if two characters interact, then an edge joining the corresponding nodes in inserted. The weight of a node is computed using the screen time of the character and weight of an edge is computed from the time of interaction of the two characters. This gives the importance of characters and their interactions in the movie. This network is called the weighted co-character network. In addition, balance theory in signed graph is used to study the smoothness of the flow of events in the movie. In this paper a comparative study and analysis of three Tamil movies Chinna Veedu, Sindhu Bhairavi and Muthal Mariyathai which were released in the year 1985 is carried out. These three movies, which were directed by prominent directors Bagyaraj, Balachandar and Baradhiraja, have extramarital affairs as a common theme. MaxQDA software is used to create codes for all movies. The different approaches of the directors in handling the theme are explored using the network model. The tools developed in this paper can be used for a comparative study of movies with a similar theme. This paper identifies why one of the above movies was not financially successful.
