Development: Concept and Definition (5 Hrs.)

Development – Concept and Definition of Development – economic, social, community and sustainable development. Rural, Urban and Tribal Community Development, participatory development, Good Governance and accountability  

Unit 2

Rural Community Development (10 Hrs.)

Determinants and problems of rural development — rural poverty, migration, agrarian crisis, food security, land acquisition, social exclusion, human–animal conflicts.
Rural development agencies and programs; analysis of past and current schemes; role of voluntary organizations. Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and digital participatory tools for rural development.

Unit 3

Tribal Community Development (10 Hrs.)

Tribes — conceptualization, characteristics, socio-economic and cultural aspects; leadership patterns; livelihood and displacement issues. Forest rights, eviction, resettlement and rehabilitation; local self-governance and socio-economic challenges. Atrocities and exploitation; role of ITDP and digital inclusion for tribal empowerment.  

Unit 4

Urban Community Development (10 Hrs.)

Urbanization processes: population growth, concentration, segregation, urban renewal, migration, and planned cities. Urban social organization — cultural, political, and economic aspects; urban problems — overcrowding, crime, poverty, slums, waste management. Urban social welfare programs and sustainable city development.
Role of Smart City initiatives and data-driven urban governance for sustainable living.  

Unit 5

Policies and Programs for Sustainable Community Development in India (10Hrs.)

National and State-level policies on Rural, Urban, and Tribal Development. Major rural and tribal development programs; urban planning and PPP models; 74th Amendment and local governance. Role of UNDP, World Bank, and national development authorities. Monitoring sustainable development through SDG indicators and AI-enabled data analysis in community projects.

This course introduces the students to the principles, approaches, and practices that promote sustainable development at the community level. It emphasizes the integration of social, economic, and environmental dimensions in community development processes. Students will explore participatory and inclusive strategies that empower communities to achieve self-reliance and resilience. The course also highlights the role of social work professionals in facilitating sustainable change through community-based interventions, policy advocacy, and capacity building aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Prerequisite: Foundations on Sustainable Development and Types of Communities

Course Objectives:

1.  To understand the concept of Development and its types.
2. To learn Rural, Urban, and Tribal Community Development.
3. To understand the various elements and challenges of Community Development.
4. To gain knowledge of National, State, and Local policies and programs for CommunityDevelopment.
5. To understand the roles of Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations in Community Development.
6. To introduce simple applications of ICT and AI-based tools for sustainable community planning and development monitoring.
