ElephantWatch
A solar-powered AI-enabled elephant detection and alert platform developed to reduce human–elephant conflict across rural India through real-time monitoring, automated detection, and instant community notifications for villages located near forest boundaries.
Project Year: 2023 – Ongoing
Country: India
Deployment States: Tamil Nadu & Odisha
Technology Stack:YOLOv4 + SSD + CNN
Human–elephant conflict continues to be one of the major ecological and social challenges across rural India. Villages located near forests frequently experience elephant intrusion into agricultural lands and residential areas, leading to crop destruction, property damage, injuries, and threats to both wildlife and human life.
Human–Elephant Conflict
Elephants often move toward villages searching for food and water. Traditional monitoring methods fail to provide early warnings during nighttime or low-visibility conditions, resulting in panic and delayed response.
AI-Based Monitoring
ElephantWatch introduces an AI-powered surveillance system capable of real-time elephant detection using intelligent object recognition, remote imaging, and automated alert systems.
Community Safety
The project empowers rural communities with instant SMS notifications and image-based alerts, helping residents respond early and safely before elephants reach village boundaries.
The ElephantWatch platform integrates AI models, renewable energy infrastructure, communication systems, and smart deployment mechanisms to enable continuous rural monitoring across forest-edge environments.
Core Deployments
AI & Detection Models
Alert & Communication
The ElephantWatch system supports multiple intelligent deployment configurations for reliable operation across forests, agricultural lands, and rural communities.
Tree-Mounted Design
Monitoring systems are mounted on elevated trees in forest-edge environments to maximize visibility and improve real-time elephant tracking capabilities.
Pole-Mounted Infrastructure
Pole-mounted units are deployed in open agricultural fields and village boundaries where tree-based installations are not feasible.
Solar-Powered Systems
Each monitoring unit includes solar-powered energy modules, battery backup systems, camera units, and weather-protected communication infrastructure.
AI Processing Workflow
The platform performs image analysis, elephant detection, classification, and automated alert generation in real time using AI-powered processing pipelines.
ElephantWatch improves community safety while supporting sustainable wildlife conservation and peaceful coexistence between humans and elephants.
Real-Time Alerts
Communities receive instant notifications before elephants enter villages, helping reduce panic and prevent dangerous encounters.
Nighttime Monitoring
Advanced grayscale imaging and AI detection support accurate elephant monitoring even during low-light conditions.
Reduced Manual Effort
Automated monitoring reduces dependency on manual night patrols and continuous human surveillance.
Scalable Conservation Model
The platform offers a scalable framework for wildlife-conflict mitigation across multiple ecological regions in India.
ElephantWatch continues to evolve through future plans involving improved AI accuracy, multi-sensor integration, expanded deployment across India, and deeper collaboration with rural communities and conservation agencies. The vision is to create a safer future where technology strengthens coexistence between people and wildlife ecosystems.
