Abstract : Rapid growth of smart cities in India necessitates an interoperable, scalable, and cost-efficient Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure. Existing Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) solutions rely on proprietary technologies such as LoRa, which increases cost and risks vendor lock-in. This paper proposes the design of an open-standard LPWAN solution based on IEEE 802.15.4g and a unified gateway for network interoperability across multiple LPWAN technologies. The proposed system is expected to facilitate cost reduction by enabling a single gateway to communicate with various LPWAN protocols and efficiently backhaul data over cellular or Wi-Fi networks to central servers. This paper outlines the technical architecture, implementation challenges, and potential benefits of this approach in the context of Indian Smart Cities.
