Acculturation and identity crisis through renaming: comparing names in Perrault’s fairy tales and their select translations

Abstract : This article does a comparative textual analysis between names in select fairy tales by Charles Perrault (1697) and names in the tales’ translations by Robert Samber (1741), J. R. Planche (1858), Christine A. Jones (2016), and Google Translate (2025). Fairy tales are national narratives that are translated to educate readers on a nation's history and culture. Like fairy tales, names carry the socio-cultural history of a society, region and/or nation. Thus, justifying with Vermeer’s skopos theory and Venuti’s view on domestication in translation, the research argues that names in fairy tale translations should be retained rather than translated or adapted.
