Amrita Centre for Sustainable Future is the Centre initiated by Amma to solve the major problems of the world such as Energy crisis, Food Shortage etc. The core areas are Sustainable food Systems, Energy and Environment, Technologies for Rural Development and Innovation and Implementation skills. Sustainable Development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

The goal of this program is to educate students about processes and technologies that can improve the lives of people in poor.

Innovation is the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, unarticulated needs, or existing market needs.
In a systematic study conducted by the Vidyapeetham, it was found that shortage of drinking water and food, rising energy cost, sanitation and health issues were the issues faced by the villages and the poor. So the new centre will focus on identifying and adapting villages for sustainable development

|A major sustainability challenge for the 21st century is reconciling the food and energy needs of an expanding population with conservation and sustainable land management for long-term ecosystem services, economic growth, and human well-being.Poverty,inequality,malnutrition, and food insecurity are strongly linked. Sustainable agriculture and food systems promise to improve food security and human health, increase resilience to climate change, and protect environmental resources.|
|Water Management||Sustainable management of water is critical because it is often used for multiple, often conflicting purposes, including domestic use, irrigation, flood control, power generation, Waste Water disposal, and fisheries. Amrita has a long standing multidisciplinary group that studies sustainable water resource management regionally and globally.|
|Human Health||Faculty from diverse disciplines explore issues related to health and nutrition behaxdors, HIV/AIDS, public health interventions, the linkages between agriculture and health (e.g., allatoxin, micronutrient insufficiency), matemal and child health, etc.|
|Crop and Livestock Growth||Amrita has long been a key player in sustainable productivity growth in developing country agriculture. Work ranges from plant breeding For stress tolerance and nutritional enhancement, to intellectual property, to improved natural resources management in agriculture, all in varied
|Climate Change||Several research teams investigate different aspects of adaptation to and mitigation of climate change in the low-income tropics, ranging from energy-related issues in Latin America, to livestock and maize systems in east Africa, to corals and coastal livelihoods in the Caribbean.|
|Sustainable Cities||By 2050 the number of people living in cities will have nearly doubled, from 3.6 billion in 201 1 to more than 6 billion. Yet the world’s urban areas are already overcrowded and, particularly in developing countries, suffer from shortages of clean Water, electricity, and other resources essential to the support of their exploding populations and fragile economies.|
|Electric Infrastructure and Smart Grids||Through collaboration with a dozen other research Universities,Amrita faculty are examining new means by which the electric power industry can achieve high performance requirements and restructuring goals to produce a "Smart Grid".Areas of investigation include analysis of new transmission roles, such as fast control of power flow, development of new tools for design and analysis, and exploration of new roles for information, communication and measurement systems.|
|Biofuels||Amrita researchers work to develop sustainable technology for bio-based energy and feedstock production. Currently addressing the physical, chemical and biological barriers to liberating sugars from bioenergy crops such as switchgrass, miscanthus, other perennial grasses and Woody biomass, and converting these sugars into fuel or other products. The integration of industrial and environmental biotechnology through broad-ranging projects assists in the discovery of both economically and ecologically advantageous biotechnological energy solutions.|
|Solar Cells||Faculty involved in solar energy research at Arnrita focus on inorganic, organic and materials. Solar energy research aims to make new discoveries that are both energy efficient and cost effective. New technologies in the form of hybrid cells, improved semiconductor materials, and electroluminescent electronics among others fuel the development of the future of solar energy.|
|Pro-Poor Financial Systems||Amrita is at the forefront of research to develop index-based insurance products both for retail-level commercial distribution to poor herders and farmers and for pre-financing of emergency response by humani-tarian organizations. Other Amrita researchers are working on the design, financing and evaluation of microfinance enterprises in the developing world.|
|Amrita faculty champion the practical application of innovative and sustainable approaches to entrepreneurial activities that benefit society in general and the poor in particular. |Community Empowerment||The institutional arrangements by which communities allocate scarce resources and set and enforce rules shape the development experience. Many Amrita faculty study the institutions of development, from local institutions of land tenure and community groups, to national political economy and multinational institutions.|
