Amrita Yoga @Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham

  • Amrita Yoga classes are regularly offered at the hostels of girls and boys as an optional practice every morning.
  • Built into the curriculum, all our under graduate first year students learn a yogic approach to life through a one credit course. There are also optional electives for post graduate students of the institution.

History

  • Amrita Yoga stems from these origins that have been part of India’s lifestyle from time immemorial.
  • Starting in 1987, Amma directed ashram residents to hold hatha yoga classes and camps for masses in various locations in Kerala and outside Kerala.
  • Classes are offered since then to Indians, Internationals visiting Amritapuri ashram and currently Amrita Yoga is offered across the globe at many different countries with a aim to promote wellness through a holistic approach of yoga.
  • Classes focused on therapeutic yoga, psychosomatic and holistic health, and meditation.

  • Ashram Brahmacharis and Brahmacharinis taught groups of young and old, school students, universities, Industrial Centres, and participants at public gatherings and events.
  • Amrita Yoga formalized under the guidance and inputs from Amma by a core team directed by Brahmacharini Shobana.
  • The first formal Amrita Yoga class was introduced at Amritapuri in 2004 for the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham students, ashram visitors and residents and at various Amrita Vidyalayam schools in India.
  • The unique teaching methodology of Amrita Yoga was formalized in 2007.
  • Mata Amritanandamayi Math was appointed in 2015 by the Indian Ministry of AYUSH and the MDNIY to help coordinate promotion, propagation, and execution of all IDY activities in India and all over the world.

Outreach & Current Activities

  • Amrita Yoga is a thriving school system offering on-going classes, retreats and workshops for all levels and abilities of people.
  • Amrita Yoga also offers teacher trainings to volunteers across the world. We are managing a team of more than 100 volunteer teachers internationally.
  • We offer open on-going classes (all levels) for the following categories:
    • Indian and International Adults visitors to Amritapuri, Kerala, India
    • Indian and International Ashram Residents at Amritapuri, Kerala, India
    • Kids ages 3-6 and 7-12  Youth FALCON – Fun, Adventure and Laughter with Compassionate Nurturing (ages 13-17 years) & Young Adults ages 18-25
    •  Corporate
  • Mata Amritanandamayi Math centers and institutions operate around the world. Each center offers yoga classes. We have more than 100 centers in India and more than 120 centers outside India.

International Day of Yoga

  • International Day of Yoga, celebrated annually on 21 June since its inception in 2015, is an international day for yoga was declared unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
  • Amrita Yoga helps coordinate the promotion, propagation and execution of all International Day of Yoga (IDY) activities in India by the Ministry of AYUSH and the MDNIY, an institution under the Ministry.
  • In 2015, in India, Amritapuri ashram, over 54 Amrita Vidyalayam schools throughout India participated in the first annual event, along with more than 150 Ashram Centers and Amrita institutions worldwide.
  • More than 300 places held independent celebrations with Amrita Yoga ambassadors in 2016.
  • IDY2017 was organized and celebrated in around 350 locations across the globe. Amrita Yoga Director was invited by the Indian Embassy, Oslo, Norway to inaugurate and celebrate IDY2017.
