Syllabus

Unit 1

Mental Health: WHO definition of Mental Health – Global Mental Health Definition – Mental Well-being- Recovery model- Mental Health Social Work or Psychiatric Social Work Definition – Historical development of Psychiatric Social Work (India & Abroad). – Need for mental health care in India. Technology and AI for Mental Health. Classification of Mental Disorders: ICD-11 and DSM-5 TR. Case History and Mental Status Examination -Symptoms of Disorders of Perception, Thought, Speech, Memory, Emotion, and Motor functioning.

Unit 2

Signs, symptoms and treatment of common mental disorders: Common Mental Disorders: Anxiety Spectrum Disorders, Mood (Affective)Disorders, Schizophrenia, Intellectual Disability, Disorders that Affect the Elderly (3 Ds- Depression, Dementia, Delirium), Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders.

Unit 3

Signs, symptoms and treatment of other mental disorders: Childhood Psychiatric Disorders, Personality Disorders, Sexual Disorders and Dysfunctions, Cultural Bound Syndromes.

Unit 4

Psychosocial Interventions and Management: Relevance and importance of Psychosocial intervention – Psychosocial Management of psychiatric illness – Individual level Group level – Family Level – Community level: family visit, school visit, visit to Collateral Contacts – Multidisciplinary Approach in Psychiatry – Role of social workers in mental health settings. Anti-Stigma and Anti-Discriminatory Practice

Unit 5

Training, Research and Welfare Measures: Training and research evidences in psychiatric social work interventions – Social welfare measures for persons with mental disability disability pension, travel concession, tax concession, etc.

Introduction

This course aims to introduce the concept of mental health and the need for mental health care in India. The learner will be able to understand the types of Mental disorders and its treatment. This course will help learners understand and apply psychosocial interventions in their fieldwork, especially in the area of mental health.

Objectives and Outcomes

Course Objective:

  1. To analyze the concept of mental health, recovery models, and the historical development of Psychiatric Social Work (PSW). 
  2. To comprehend and differentiate the major classification systems for mental disorders (ICD-11, DSM-5 TR). 
  3. To acquire detailed knowledge of the signs, symptoms, and multidisciplinary treatment of common and other mental disorders across the lifespan. 
  4. To learn the principles and methods of psychosocial intervention and management at individual, group, family, and community levels. 
  5. To explore the role of PSW in research, training, and advocating for social welfare measures and anti-stigma practices. 

Course outcome:

  1. Analyze the concepts of Mental Health, the Recovery Model, the historical evolution, and the use of Technology and AI in Psychiatric Social Work. 
  2. Differentiate and apply knowledge of mental disorder classifications (ICD-11, DSM-5 TR), signs, and symptoms in clinical case assessment. 
  3. Evaluate the signs, symptoms, and multidisciplinary treatment modalities for various mental disorders. 
  4. Design and implement appropriate psychosocial interventions at the individual, family, and community levels, incorporating anti-stigma and anti-discriminatory practice. 
  5. Justify the need for and advocate for social welfare measures, research, and training to support persons with mental illness
