Dr. Jinka Venkata Aravind currently serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Amrita School of Computing, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Chennai Campus.
Dr. J. V. Aravind completed his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Underwater Object Detection and Tracking from SRM Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University), Kattankulathur, Chennai, in November 2025. His doctoral research, titled “AI-Enabled Hybrid System for Underwater Target Detection and Real-time Tracking and Positioning for Marine Applications,” focuses on the development of intelligent systems for marine and underwater applications. He obtained his Master of Technology in Communication Systems from SRM University in 2018 and was awarded the Gold Medal for academic excellence.
Dr. Aravind has more than five years of research experience in underwater object detection, Edge AI, computer vision, and wireless optical communication and has worked as a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) and Senior Research Fellow (SRF) in multiple nationally funded research projects(not as PI/Co-PI). These include a DRDO–Naval Research Board (DRDO-NRB) funded project titled “Optical Wireless Communication for Underwater Data Muling and Positioning in Underwater Sensor Applications” with a total project cost of ₹38.76 lakhs (2019–2022), where he worked as JRF (two years) and SRF (one year), and another DRDO–NRB project titled “Design, Development and Testing of an Optical Transceiver for Establishing Underwater Optical Wireless Audio-Video Communication” with a project cost of ₹21.68 lakhs (2016–2018), where he worked as a Postgraduate Research Assistant for his Master’s Project. He was also involved in the ISRO–RESPOND project titled “Wireless Optical Signalling Based Inter-Satellite Tracking and Monitoring for High Data Rate Communication” (project cost: ₹26.08 lakhs, 2017–2019), where he contributed in 2020 during COVID time as a Research Scholar without holding any official project position. In addition, he worked as a CSIR-Direct Senior Research Fellow under a CSIR-HRDG funded research project (2024–2025).
He has published several research papers in SCI-indexed and Scopus-indexed journals, including IEEE Sensors Letters, Marine Georesources & Geotechnology, and Optics Continuum, along with multiple international conference publications, a book chapter, and two Indian patents published in the area of AI-enabled underwater detection and positioning systems.
He has also completed several international certifications and specialised training programs in computer vision, deep learning, MATLAB programming, cybersecurity, and NVIDIA Edge AI platforms from reputed institutions and industry organizations such as NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute, ISRO, Cisco Networking Academy, and leading global universities.
His research interests include underwater object detection using AI and machine learning, wireless optical communication, Edge AI systems, computer vision, and embedded systems, with a strong focus on research, student mentoring, and academic activities.
