Dr. Maya Mahajan currently serves as Associate Professor at the Center for Sustainable Future, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore.

Dr. Maya Mahajan is an environmental professional and passionate & committed environmentalist. She has more than 25 years of experience in research, training, advocacy and management in various sectors of Environment and Development - Biodiversity Conservation, Sustainable Development, Participatory Forest Management, Sustainable livelihood, Wetland Ecology, Forest Ecology, Environmental Pollution, Environment Education etc.

This been said, Dr. Maya Mahajan has a long list of educational and academic achievements that backs her vast experience. A post-graduate in Botany with a doctoral degree in Environmental Sciences; a post-graduate diploma in Environment Education from CEE, Ahmedabad and SIDA Canada an executive MBA from Symbiosis International University, Pune. She is also a certified lead auditor of ISO 14001.

Her parents Uma & Dr. V. S. Mahajan are social workers and that foundation saw her becoming an activist cum scientist for social and environmental causes. She established the Siruvani Lantana furniture and craft centre where she generated sustainable livelihood for tribal families by training  around 100 tribals in lantana craft and furniture making with the help of funds obtained from DST.  This activity also helped in conservation of Siruvani forest by controllong Lantana invasion. With her constant guidance, motivation  and proper marketing support, she trained 40 tribal farmers to implement Organic  farming over chemical agriculture. She's instrumental in conducting scientific studies and forming people’s forum- Dahanu Taluka Bachao Samiti to conserve Dahanu taluka, an ecologically sensitive area.

She was a key resource person for developing  and implementation of education module on Environment and sustainability which was implemented for National teachers training program organized by IIT, Mumbai, where 170 representatives  and 10000 teachers got benefited.

She played a key role in conservation of Mangrove wetlands in Mumbai through research, restoration and education and awareness building, with SP Godrej Marine Ecology Centre (CSR wing of Godrej groups) in Mumbai, and was awarded the Woman of Substance 2007 - 2008 Award by the Young Environmentalists Programme trust at the Environmental Arts Awards function for her contribution to Environment protection through education, public awareness, research and conservation of Mangroves.

She was also invited as a Mangrove expert in the planning phase of Maharashtra Gene Bank, a project being proposed by Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission of Government of Maharashtra.

She was responsible for providing scientific and technological support to NGOs working at grass root level in various parts in the country (Bhopal, Pench, Deharadoon, Uttar kannada, Ellore, Vapi, Unnao etc) while heading Environment quality monitoring division in People’s science Institute at Deharadoon.

With an indomitable and determined personality Dr. Mahajan is the "Scientist" who is able to communicate with the local community with as much élan with which she can communicate with the scientific community.

She has presented and published several scientific papers in national and international journals, books and was key note speaker for international conferences including 6th Griha summit, Earth Science and Engineering, Environmental Governance & Sustainable development etc and has written books, book chapters and several popular articles on various environmental issues.
