Advancing Coastal Resilience: AMMACHI Labs Highlights the Importance of Mangroves, Seagrasses and Coral Reefs

Amritapuri, Kerala: Mangroves, seagrasses, and coral reefs form the living foundation of healthy and resilient coastal ecosystems, supporting marine biodiversity, protecting shorelines, and sustaining the livelihoods of millions of coastal communities worldwide.

At AMMACHI Labs and the Center for Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality (CWEGE), ongoing work in seagrass restoration and sustainable ocean livelihoods has reinforced the importance of collaborative action to protect and restore marine ecosystems. Through initiatives engaging coastal communities, researchers, educators, and institutions, the organisation continues to contribute to efforts that promote sustainable livelihoods and strengthen community resilience.

In this context, AMMACHI Labs and CWEGE are pleased to highlight an upcoming UNESCO World Mangrove Day programme hosted by the Amrita School for Sustainable Futures, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus.

The programme will bring together leading experts and stakeholders to explore key themes including mangrove restoration, blue carbon, coastal biodiversity, and sustainable coastal management. These areas closely complement ongoing efforts to support coastal communities and promote sustainable ocean-based livelihoods across India.

Mangroves are among the world’s most valuable blue carbon ecosystems. They play a vital role in protecting coastlines, supporting fisheries, storing carbon, conserving biodiversity, and strengthening communities’ resilience to the impacts of climate change. Their ecological importance also extends beyond mangrove forests themselves, as mangroves, seagrass meadows, and coral reefs function as interconnected coastal ecosystems that support one another and provide critical habitats for marine life.

The upcoming programme offers an opportunity to deepen awareness and encourage dialogue on the importance of protecting these vital ecosystems. It also highlights the need for collaborative approaches that connect scientific knowledge, community participation, education, and sustainable development.
