The Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, has declared Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham as a Center of Excellence in Tribal Empowerment (Tribal CoE). This multidisciplinary center has faculty expertise from various Amrita departments.

The Menstrual Awareness – Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Program was developed by Amrita Center for Research in Analytics, Technologies & Education (AmritaCREATE).

There are many misconceptions regarding menstruation and health in rural and tribal areas. A menstrual hygiene awareness research study was developed and implemented among tribal youth to understand the impact of reusable pads in a study pool of one school, with emphasis on its use and hygienic practices adopted post-training.

The main aim was to develop a menstrual hygiene awareness program to empower tribal girls and young women by dispelling misconceptions, as well as encouraging more sanitary menstrual practices, and to study the impact of the intervention itself. The program focused awareness on the health impact caused by lack of menstrual hygiene. The aim was to improve health with better sanitation practices, to raise self-esteem and empower girls and women by initiating dialog on the taboo topic of menstruation.

Program objective:

To provide menstrual hygiene awareness for tribal females of menstrual age.
