Abstract : The use of effective clustering algorithms can extend the life of wireless sensor networks. In general, the clustering algorithm should have the ability to reduce the energy requirement. Henceforth, this paper presents the particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique for the selection of master cluster head (MCH) and surrogate cluster head (SCH) and an efficient multidirectional routing is proposed for packet transmission. To reduce the energy consumption between different MCHs, PSO algorithm utilizes clustering method with different parameters. During the sudden failure of MCH, the communication between nodes in the network is maintained by choosing an extra cluster head (CH) called SCH. Using multidirectional routing technique, the packets will be transmitted through nodes other than the selected CH if it is necessary to reduce the routing distance. The experimental result shows that, the proposed method works well when compared to traditional LEACH algorithm.
