Abstract : Image analysis approach is adopted for identifying two species of vanilla; a popular spice yielding orchid. Vanilla species namely Vanilla planifolia (cultivated species) and Vanilla andamanica (wild species) were compared using image analysis of their leaves which is otherwise done using plant taxonomical methods, mainly flower morphology. Geometric features of the leaves of the two species were computed and four features were identified for distinguishing these two species. Support Vector Machine classifier was employed to get accurate results. The algorithm was implemented in OpenCV-Java. This facilitates porting the application to an embedded platform which is in progress. The approach is helpful for identifying these two species of Vanilla before flowering.
