Abstract : One of the crucial problem in recent day scenario is heavily loaded transmission lines. Under heavy loaded conditions, there may be insufficient reactive power supply causing voltage drops at various buses. The result would cause a voltage collapse leading to a total blackout of the whole system. Series compensation can reduce the overloading of lines. This paper deals with the application of Static Synchronous Series Compensation(SSSC) to provide series compensation to the transmission line. SSSC is a FACTS device which consists of a voltage source converter with a DC link capacitor which injects the voltage in quadrature with line current through a series transformer and can be operated in both inductive or capacitive mode. Both simulation and experimental results show that the real power flow in the transmission line is enhanced or reduced by SSSC.
