Abstract : Lifelong learning is a form of self-initiated education that is focused on personal development and not just in formal settings like schools or workplaces. Lifelong learning can help people achieve personal fulfillment, satisfaction, and growth by pursuing their interests and passions. Due to the rapid changes in technology and society, lifelong learning has become necessary for both personal and professional development and the general advancement of society. Digital technologies play a crucial role in lifelong learning by providing various opportunities and benefits for learners. Among them, Metaverse technology, which refers to a set of digital spaces where people can socialize, is an emerging technology that incorporates a host of technology components such as artificial intelligence, virtual or augmented reality, blockchains, etc., to provide an environment not limited to the mobile phone screen. However, entry barriers such as cost, complexity, and competition currently prevent lifelong learning-related experimentations in the metaverse. Therefore, this chapter will focus on mapping current research and development of metaverse technologies in a lifelong learning context through a review. This chapter will present a systematic review of the available academic manuscripts in the global context and compare the developments with China's metaverse and lifelong learning perspectives for a unified global consideration. In addition, this chapter provides an EDA analysis of global patents for related technologies from 2012 to 2022 in conjunction with the Derwent innovation patent database and will give a review according to the EDA analysis.
