Abstract : Engineering metals and alloys, considered as functional structural materials in various industries such as aerospace and electronics, need to inhibit superior properties. However, certain traits, such as minimal hardness and wear resistance, can limit their usage. Under such conditions, surface modification through the laser cladding technique would help to enhance the surface characteristics by developing a wear-resistant layer on the substrate. Along with the effect of distinct process parameters on the tribological characteristics of surface-modified substrate metal, different elements do have effect on the same. The formation of different intermetallic compounds with the addition of elements during laser cladding enhances the wear resistance of the developed coating through fluctuations in friction coefficient values. This chapter details the effect of different alloying elements on the wear resistance of the developed surface coating formed through the laser cladding technique. A detailed discussion on the development of different wear-resistant phases during laser cladding, along with its influence, is provided.
