Abstract : The development of household appliances creates power quality issues in residential networks. Harmonic-related problems are increased during excessive usage of power electronic converters that involve producing more nonlinear loads and reactive power requirements from AC supply. This chapter explains the main causes of power disturbances in home appliances and provides simple solutions to protect residential systems. To protect various appliances, surge protection and programmable protection schemes are discussed. Harmonic analysis has been verified using MATLAB/Simulink models to demonstrate the impact of power quality disturbances in residential systems.
