Abstract : Elderly people represent one of the extremely susceptible groups with its number on an everincreasing trend, becoming a major concern to every society. The present status of elderly is on rise from 7.5 % in 2001 to about 8.2% in 2012 and is expected to increase up to 9.9% in 2021. (Rajan S Irudaya). The life situation of old age people of Kerala is undergone a rapid change in the social and family scenario has resulted in a peculiar condition which is different from the situation existed in the other part of the country.This paper is an attempt to analyze the need and scope of indigenous Social Work practice by exposing the geriatric issues especially of those under governmental institutional care from a research study conducted among them . The major findings include the need of indigenous Social Work practice in the agency, meeting of the ‘the real objective’s of the institutional care , promotion of community level rehabilitation of elderly over institutional care, promotion of Government. Day care homes and non institutional care services.
