The Department of Social Work at Coimbatore, established in the academic year 2007–08, is part of the School of Social and Behavioural Sciences at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Located at the Arasampalayam campus in Coimbatore, the department offers a comprehensive range of academic programs including the Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) with Research, Master of Social Work (MSW), Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling Psychology (PGDCP), and Ph.D. in Social and Behavioural Sciences. These programs are designed to address the growing demand for skilled professionals in the domains of social development, mental health, and community-based interventions.

Known for its strong emphasis on evidence-based education, the department blends academic learning, technological-driven approach with intensive fieldwork and interdisciplinary research. The MSW program remains central, offering specializations in emerging areas and preparing graduates for impactful careers across health care, child welfare, social policy, and NGO sectors. The newly introduced BSW Honours program fosters research skills from the undergraduate level, while the PG Diploma in Counselling Psychology provides focused training for those pursuing mental health and therapeutic careers. The doctoral program advances scholarly inquiry into social issues through innovative, community-driven research.

With a deep-rooted commitment to compassion in action, the department integrates traditional Indian values with global best practices in social work. It continues to play a key role in capacity building, social transformation, and the empowerment of individuals and communities through education, practice, and research.

 

Activities

The department frequently displays wall posters on current social issues, problems and needs to inform and educate students and the public.The students have conducted seminars and workshops on Drugs and Alcohol Abuse, Suicide Prevention and Crisis Management. Our students are active in institution wide cultural and spiritual activities. 

Field education

Consistent with the mission of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, the students are bestowed with an opportunity to transcend theoretical knowledge by engaging in educational endeavors that helps nurture their skills and appreciate the realities of coping with complex problems in the quest to improve the quality of life and subjective well-being of the society.

The corporate world has widely appreciated the fact that the alumni of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, have the sense of responsibility which made the employers confident in delegating new changes to them. In order to stay connected, Amritians (Alumni of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham) have started Chapters in major cities in India and abroad. 

Research 

The Department engages in research on the interplay between vulnerabilities, development and human rights that feed into knowledge enhancement, direct action and policy building. Research initiatives address diverse levels of human problems, guided by need, capacity, and rights-based approaches.  

Placements

The Department of Social Work at Amrita has established relationships with over sixty collaborating social service organizations across south and central India where students can do their internships, projects and other experiential learning. These organizations are also potential places of employment for Our graduates.
