Prestigious Outstanding Student Branch Award for Amrita

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Student Branch (IEEE SB) at Amritapuri campus received the prestigious Outstanding Student Branch Award during the IEEE Kerala Section Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Kollam on January 11, 2014.

Prestigious Outstanding Student Branch Award for AmritaBr. Rajesh Kannan Magalingam, both Branch Counselor of Amrita IEEE SB and Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering received the award on the occasion of the IEEE Kerala Section AGM 2014.

Sreenivasan, IEEE Kerala Section Chairman, Sabarinath Pillai, IEEE Kerala section Secretary, Dr. Sameer, Treasurer of IEEE Kerala Section and Unni Shankar, Vice Chairman of IEEE Kerala Section were present during the award ceremony.

Over 200 senior members, young professionals and student members from different regions of Kerala participated in the AGM.

“Amrita IEEE SB has been doing extremely well for the past few years. Several research papers were presented and published in various international/national conferences both in India and abroad, several other prestigious awards and nominations at the international/national/state level, best student branch level events (ISEE, the flagship event of Amrita SB), etc, were made possible only by the hardwork of student members. I dedicate this award to the sacrifice, commitment and whole-hearted support of the student members,” gushed Br. Rajesh.

2013 Amrita IEEE Student Branch Accolades

2013 was one of the most vibrant years for Amrita IEEE SB. The SB strengthened to form nine student chapters with the formation of five new student chapters viz. IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) Student Chapter, IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) Student Chapter, IEEE Computer Society (CS) Student Chapter, IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) Student Chapter and IEEE Communication Society (ComSoc) Student Chapter.

In addition, Amrita became the only SB in IEEE Kerala Section having an IEEE Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology (IEEE SIGHT) called HuT.

The SB having a member count of 170 organized a total of 23 activities in the year 2013 which consisted of 17 technical and 6 non-technical programs.

Prestigious Outstanding Student Branch Award for AmritaIEEE International Symposium on Education Technology and Entrepreneurship (ISEE) 2013, (2nd edition), one of the most successful events, was organized on July 28, 2013, having a participation of more than 800 undergraduate students from different corners of India. The event covered various science and technology based lecture series and workshops.

The Amrita IEEE SB has to its credit 7 international research paper publications in 2013, leading to a total publication of 68 research papers. In addition, Amrita IEEE SB received numerous fundings such as IEEE Standard Education Grant, IEEE-EPICS Committee Grant and IEEE-Region 10 Funding, as a support for various humanitarian projects.

Other awards and scholarships received for IEEE student members and branch counselor in 2013

  • Athul Balan, final-year BTech ECE student, has the prestigious Richard E. Merwin Scholarship award from IEEE CS, Washindon D. C., USA. The award includes nine months as a Merwin Student Ambassador, an IEEE CS mentor, $1000 financial award, as well as a two-year paid membership as an IEEE CS student member. He is the fourth student at Amrita to win this international award.

  • Final-year BTech ECE students, Athul A. T., Athul Balan, Goutham P., Vivek J. and Mourya G. won the first prize of Rs 1. 5 lakhs in Mentor Graphics University Design Contest. Amrita team won the title competing with M. Tech. students from other universities. The prize was awarded at the U2U Conference 2013, Bangalore by Walden C. Rhines, CEO and Chairman of Board, Mentor Graphics Corp., U. S. A.

  • Rajesh Kannan M. was revered with IEEE Outstanding Counselor and Advisor Award by IEEE, New Jersey, U. S. A. He received a cash prize of U. S. $500 and a certificate of merit. Also, the Student Branch received a U. S. $200 as cash award for submitting the nomination.

  • IEEE Student Enterprise Award was bagged by the team of Goutham P., Vivek J. and Mourya G., all final-year BTech students of ECE for their project titled PULSS: Portable Ultrasound Scan System for Low Resource Settings. The award consists of U. S. $1500 towards project implementation.

  • The website of IEEE Industrial Application Society (IAS) Student chapter of Amrita grabbed the Region 10 Outstanding Website Award.

  • The IEEE IAS student chapter formed in November 2012 received IEEE Outstanding New Chapter Award.
