As part of their ongoing field visit to Andhra Pradesh, the AMMACHI Labs Ocean Farming Team explored the NFDB-supported aquaculture site at Mulapolam Village, operated by Udaya Aqua International Ltd. in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries.
Spread across nearly 100 acres, the facility features large-scale trials in shrimp culture, Gracilaria salicornia (seaweed), and mud crab farming, along with the development of nursery units for pompano and seabass.
During the visit, the team engaged in insightful discussions with Dr. Chandan (Scientist), Tulsiramji, and members of the Udaya Aqua team, who are recognized for their pioneering efforts in sustainable aquaculture practices.
The team also interacted with Self-Help Group (SHG) women involved in seaweed trials, emphasizing the potential for women-led livelihood opportunities within large-scale fisheries and aquaculture programs.
This field visit provided valuable insights into scalable and sustainable aquaculture models that merge technical innovation, institutional collaboration, and community participation—strengthening the foundation for the “Blue is the New Pink” initiative’s expansion across Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
This initiative supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
The project is implemented by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham with support from ESRI India and SERP (Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty).
