Amrita’s Sustainability & Women Empowerment Initiatives Strengthen Across India

A series of impactful field visits, hands-on training programs, and collaborative engagements marked a significant month for Amrita’s sustainability and women empowerment initiatives. Led under the vision of Amma — Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi — the activities showcased Amrita’s deep commitment to circular economy practices, community development, and skill-building for women across rural and urban India.

October 1, 2025 – Visit to EcoKaari Unit, Pune

Shweta Lanke Kane visited EcoKaari, an innovative social enterprise in Pune that upcycles discarded wrappers into fashion accessories. The visit aimed to draw inspiration for Amrita’s own initiatives in recycling and upcycling solid waste. EcoKaari empowers women through employment in pre-looming, looming, and finishing processes, turning waste into high-quality, market-ready products. The visit offered valuable insights into sustainable practices that prevent landfill accumulation and strengthen women-led micro-enterprises.

October 3, 2025 – Visit to Green Society, Mumbai

At the Green Society in Mumbai, discussions were held with office bearers and environmental expert Neeta Ganguly on advancing zero-waste initiatives. The team explored how waste materials can be upcycled into organic and eco-friendly products. The Green Society’s initiatives — from cleaning drives and waste segregation to training tribal women in upcycling hotel linens — served as a model for circular economy practices. They also expressed interest in collaborating on student programs, ocean cleanup campaigns, and environmental awareness drives.

October 4, 2025 – Training at Karunagappally Center

Trainer Muskan conducted a hands-on session for Sumalakshmi ji, a Vishwakarma Project alumna, focusing on constructing a V-neck dress with elasticated shirred sleeves. The training emphasized seam finishes, pocket placement, and production techniques for Tula garments.

October 6, 2025 – Training at Karunagappally Center (Vallikavu)

Continuing the initiative, Muskan trained Vijaylakshmi ji, another Vishwakarma Project alumna, in creating a Kimono wrap top, focusing on pattern precision, seam allowance, and finishing methods aligned with Tula’s design standards.

October 7–8, 2025 – Training at Ayanivelikulangara

Further extending the training network, Sreeshma ji of Ayanivelikulangara received in-depth training on crafting Kimono wrap tops, reinforcing quality control, craftsmanship, and garment finishing for sustainable fashion production.

October 8, 2025 – RVSM School Visit to Women Empowerment Exhibition

Students from RVSM School (Classes 11 and 12) visited the Women Empowerment Exhibition at Vallikavu. The students and teachers showed great enthusiasm in learning about the handmade products and the stories behind them, appreciating the artistry and social impact of the women-led initiatives.

October 8, 2025 – Quality Training at Kattilkadavu Group

Trainers Sudha and Ambujam led a quality training workshop for the Kattilkadavu group on making drawstring pouches, focusing on precision stitching, durability, and aesthetic design for upcycled crafts.

October 8, 2025 – Feedback Session by Muskan

Muskan also held a feedback session with Vishwakarma Project alumni at Vallikavu, providing guidance on improving garment quality and finishing for future collections under Tula – The Label by Anantashri.

October 15, 2025 – Interaction with Swachhta Mission Kerala

Members from the Swachhta Mission Kerala visited Amrita’s exhibition stall in Kollam and expressed strong interest in the institution’s ongoing sustainability projects. Impressed by the Kattilkadavu group’s work, the mission coordinator shared plans for future collaborations and invited Amrita’s participation in upcoming state-level programs.

From upcycling initiatives in Pune and Mumbai to training programs in Kollam and partnerships with Swachhta Mission Kerala, the month of October 2025 demonstrated Amrita’s holistic approach to environmental sustainability, women empowerment, and skill-based innovation.
