Institutional Overview

The Department of Anatomy at Amrita school of medicine was established in Oct 2022 by Col BK Mishra (Principal & Prof Anatomy). Department received first batch of MBBS students in Sept 2023. Fully air-conditioned Anatomy department occupies entire top floor of Medical School’s building. The Department is currently headed by Dr (Brig) Sushil Kumar since May 2023.

The primary aim of Anatomy department is to impart comprehensive, conceptual and clinically oriented knowledge of anatomy to the students to provide understanding of anatomical basis and clinical correlation of disease presentation and management.

Anatomy department is also involved teaching anatomy to allied medical branches (BSc Nursing, Paramedical courses, MHA, etc).

Anatomy department has been set-up and equipped to impart quality teaching and training at UG, PG and doctoral levels.

Infrastructure at Anatomy Department

Dissection Hall

Fully air-conditioned, state of the art dissection hall is provided with 15 storage cum dissection tables for dissection. Only ten students are assigned per table for better learning outcome. For day-to-day dissection, these cadavers are placed in phenoxy-ethylene solution instead of formalin solution. Phenoxy-ethylene is non-toxic, user friendly, odourless and does not cause eye irritation and other side effects which may be seen in some individuals.

The dissection hall is also provided with three large display panels with internet connection with PA system as a part of modern teaching & training tool to impart quality teaching.

Histology Lab

Fully air-conditioned state of the art histology lab is provided with fifty work stations for students. Histology section is also provided with a fully automatic tissue processing unit. Required and desired histology slides are made in-house for study and research.

Gross Anatomy Museum

This museum has a large collection of gross anatomy and neuroanatomy specimens along with plastinated specimens. It also has an osteology section. All specimens are provided with write-ups for self-study

Embryology Museum & Lab

Anatomy department has a separate embryology museum. Each and every embryology model is provided with write-up for self-study.

PG Research Labs

The department is provided with two PG research labs with four work stations. Research for MD (Anatomy) and PhD can be undertaken by the enrolled PG students.

Soft Embalmed Cadaver Lab

Anatomy department collaborates and helps in organising various cadaveric workshops for PG training and skills training in surgical and allied disciplines. Anatomy department is well equipped with fully functional soft embalmed cadaver lab with three deep freezers (-50 degree) for storing these specially embalmed cadavers for workshops by various clinical departments in association with anatomy department. These workshops for PG training and skills training are held regularly. About 10-12 work-shops are held per year.

Body Donation Program

Anatomy department is successfully running body donation program since inception. The department receives donated bodies from various sources (trusts & individual donation). The department is a centralized facility for embalming and a recognized centre for voluntary body donation.
