Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, through the Center for Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality (CWEGE), AMMACHI Labs, and the Amrita School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (SSBS), has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP), an initiative of the Government of Andhra Pradesh. SERP works closely with women-led Self-Help Groups to drive sustainable development and alleviate rural poverty across the state.
This strategic collaboration aims to strengthen women’s empowerment through capacity-building, technology-driven skill development, and sustainable livelihood initiatives. By combining Amrita’s research expertise with SERP’s strong community networks, the partnership seeks to create scalable and socially impactful programs for rural women.
The first phase of the MoU focuses on a women-led initiative centered on Integrated Land and Ocean Conservation and seaweed-based livelihoods in three coastal villages of Andhra Pradesh. The programme emphasizes strong community ownership—enabling women from Self-Help Groups to co-design and lead interventions across seaweed cultivation, sustainable aquaculture, and the seaweed value chain.
Through technology-enabled vocational and life-skills training, the initiative will empower women as Environmental Change Ambassadors, equipping them to drive local resilience, climate adaptation, and sustainable economic opportunities within their communities.
This collaboration is closely aligned with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:
Amrita’s partnership with SERP marks a significant step toward strengthening climate-resilient livelihoods and fostering inclusive, women-led transformation across coastal Andhra Pradesh.
