Abstract : The establishment of robust charging infrastructure is a critical component in the rapid expansion of electric mobility (e-mobility). This chapter examines the essential role of charging infrastructure in facilitating the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). It analyzes the technological advancements and infrastructural requirements needed to make EV charging systems functional. An overview of various types of charging devices (Level 1–Level 4), along with their features and applications, is provided. The impact of different types of charging infrastructure—conventional, DC and AC bus-based, and renewable energy-integrated stations—on EV acceptance is discussed. Techniques for determining the best locations for stations, such as path-based, tour-based, and node-based approaches, are reviewed. Innovations in charging technology, including battery-swapping stations, ultra-fast charging, and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) systems, are examined, along with challenges like heat management and battery longevity. The development of charging infrastructure is influenced by several key technological, managerial, and policy-related factors, with a focus on the integration of renewable energy sources. The chapter concludes with a summary of upcoming developments and challenges in EV charging technology, providing stakeholders with valuable information to create effective and sustainable solutions.
