The Department of Civil Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore Campus is organizing an International Short Course on Subsurface Construction and Maintenance Using Geosynthetics on September 21st, 2018. The course is organized in association with ACRD.

About the Course

Geosynthetics are polymeric materials which are used to enhance, augment and provide possible cost-effective solutions for geotechnical, environmental, transportation and hydraulic engineering projects. Geosynthetics have become well established construction materials which can be utilized for all stages of construction to strengthen infrastructure by improving road design, preserving water, controlling evaporation, limiting erosion, and enhancing the longevity, resilience and safety of structures. With the development of geosynthetics, their applicable range extends to areas other than civil engineering, such as mining, agricultural and aqua-cultural engineering. There are various types of geosynthetics available as required for different applications and environments. Rational design methods, based on sound concepts and standardized test techniques for determining the technical properties of geosynthetics, are now available, thus placing the geosynthetics on a firm base. This course is designed to cover the fundamentals of geosynthetics and their applications in subsurface construction and maintenance using geosynthetics, mainly focusing on foundations and tunnels.

Objectives of the Course

Upon completion of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between types of Geosynthetics and their primary and secondary functions they perform in various applications.
  • Select the Geosynthetics for their appropriate and cost-effective use in construction and maintenance of foundations.
  • Select the Geosynthetics for their appropriate and cost-effective use in construction and maintenance of tunnels.
  • Recommend the type of test on Geosynthetics required for their applications in foundations and tunnels.
  • Develop the general guidelines for Geosynthetic installations in foundations and tunnels.
  • Locate the additional references on Geosynthetics and their applications.
