“I, hereby, solemnly declare and promise that I will, in my thoughts, words and deeds, uphold the ideals of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and commit myself to serving my motherland India, Mother Nature and mankind with love, trust, tolerance and humility.”

Over four thousand voices chanted in unison as Sampujya Swami Poornamritananda Puri, General Secretary, Mata Amritanandamayi Math, administered the oath to graduating students of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham at the convocation ceremony on September 16, 2012.

The Mata Amritanandamayi Math is the managing body of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.

“Everybody is looking for eternal happiness, and this comes from supreme knowledge alone,” reminded Swamiji, speaking to the graduands.

Graduating with degrees such as MSW, MBBS, MD, MCh, BTech, MTech, MS, BCA, MCA, BSc, MSc, BPharm, MPharm, BBM, MBA, BCom, MCom, BA, MA, MFA and BEd, the students, in their traditional attire, listened attentively to the speakers on the dais.

Shri K. Venkataramanan, CEO and MD, Larsen & Toubro, in his convocation address, not only outlined the general path to career growth that most graduating students would likely take, but also outlined his vision for a resurgent India.

“This century belongs to India – it is a period of high growth and international recognition for her,” he asserted.

Honorable Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development, Dr. D. Purandeswari, who was scheduled to attend the convocation, but had to cancel at the last minute, sent an insightful message that was pre-recorded and played at the ceremony.

“Education for all, is not only a goal in itself today, but is also being seen as a powerful driver for socio-economic change,” stated the Honorable Minister.

“From a humble beginning of around 120 students, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has grown from strength to strength and today it has 17,000 students enrolled in various disciplines. We appreciate and acknowledge the yeoman service that Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is doing, to impart quality education to Indian children, which has been a focus area for our Government,” she added.

The speakers congratulated the outgoing students. Dr. Shantikumar Nair, Dean-Research of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, presented the 21 graduands who were receiving doctoral degrees. 1352 students received graduate degrees and 2809 students received undergraduate degrees that day, as well.

Gold and silver medals were awarded to top performing students from every discipline.

“I feel very proud to be graduating from Amrita. I have learned a lot here. Our department ensured that we gained very good experience doing projects and meaningful field work,” shared Ms. Archana Alambatta, who graduated with an MSW degree.

“The two years we spent at Amrita are unforgettable. Coming back here again for the convocation ceremony, after we completed our studies in May, felt as if we were returning home. The years spent here were rich with memorable experiences and wonderful moments that we will never forget,” emotionally stated students who graduated with MTech degrees in Biomedical Engineering from the Coimbatore campus.
