Amrita Faculty Appointed Adjunct Scientist at SETS

Dr. M. Sethumadhavan, Professor and Head, Centre for Cyber Security in Coimbatore was recently appointed Honorary Adjunct Scientist at the Society for Electronic Transactions and Security (SETS) in Chennai.

“As Adjunct Scientist, I am expected to travel to SETS in Chennai as often as needed, to collaborate with the scientists there on research work,” he informed.

An initiative of the Central Government, SETS was started to develop technologies to protect the information wealth of the nation.

Cyber Security

The idea to form a specialized organization in the area of information security was first mooted by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, formerly the Hon’ble President of India.

Established in the public-private partnership mode, SETS has Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham as one of its partnering organizations.

Dr. Venkat Rangan, Vice Chancellor of Amrita, serves on the Board of Directors of SETS.

As such, Dr. Sethumadhavan’s honorary appointment could result in more research and collaborative opportunities in the area of cybersecurity for Amrita.

“With this appointment, I will be expected to identify new areas of research for SETS jointly with Amrita,” stated Dr. Sethumadhavan.

Dr. Sethumadhavan’s main focus of research is cryptography. He worked on the development of fast and effective cryptographic techniques as part of a project sponsored by the Indian Space Research Organization.

Another project funded by the Government of India involved the design and analysis of cryptographically secure power generators.

The Center for Cyber Security at Amrita has labs in both Amritapuri and Coimbatore, and is engaged in several other projects, as well. Amrita also offers an M.Tech. program in Cybersecurity at its Coimbatore campus.

SETS supports one M.Tech. student every year through a SETS fellowship. These students have the opportunity to work on leading projects that involve security issues in electronic transactions on the internet.
