Amrita Presents at Global Sustainable Development Congress in JAKARTA

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham participated in two sessions at the Global Sustainable Development Congress 2026 this week, with senior university officials discussing higher education’s approach to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Dr. Maneesha Vinodini Ramesh, Pro Vice-Chancellor, spoke on a panel titled “Driving Change: How South Asian Higher Education Powers the SDGs” on June 22. The session, moderated by Times Higher Education’s Ritin Malhotra, featured Vice-Chancellors from multiple South Asian universities discussing how institutions advance SDG priorities with limited resources.

Dr. Maneesha discussed Amrita’s rural outreach programmes, noting the university’s work across 2,800+ villages in India. She outlined Amrita’s approach to translating research into practical applications in areas such as early-warning systems for landslides and clean water initiatives.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE SESSION

Dr. Raghu Raman, Dean of Amrita School fo Business, participated on June 23 in a 2.5-hour workshop titled “Beyond the Syllabus: Embedding Sustainability into the Larger Learning Journey,” organized by the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) Student Action Group. The session brought together representatives from UNESCO, UN University, student unions, and climate advocacy organizations to discuss integrating sustainability into all aspects of student experience.

Dr. Raman discussed Amrita’s Live-in-Labs programme, which places students in rural communities to work on development projects.

The Global Sustainable Development Congress runs June 22-25 in Jakarta, bringing together university leaders, government officials, and development organizations to discuss higher education’s role in sustainable development.
