Dr. Vinayan K. P., Clinical Professor in the Department of Neurology at the Amrita School of Medicine, was recently appointed as a member of an international task force for epilepsy.
 

“The task force will develop guidelines for the diagnosis and management of epilepsies in children,” informed Dr. Vinayan. As the only representative from India, Dr. Vinayan will work with renowned experts from all over the world.
 

Part of the International League against Epilepsy, the task force will strive towards advancing and disseminating knowledge about epilepsy, especially in children, and promoting research, education and training for its management.
 

Dr. Vinayan heads the newly inaugurated Center for Epilepsy at Amrita. One of the thrust areas of this center is the management of complex childhood epilepsy cases. “We are treating several such cases at Amrita,” he shared.
 

“Epileptic children have the tendency to experience repeated seizures; and these stem from activity originating in the brain,” he explained.
 

Dedicated to improving care for these child patients, by prevention, diagnosis and treatment, the Amrita center is as of today, one of the very few places in India offering these services.
 

Dr. Vinayan joined Amrita in 2002. In 2005, he was selected for the Asia-Oceania Fellowship in Epileptology by the International League against Epilepsy. During the following year, he underwent training in epilepsy at the National Epilepsy Centre of Japan.
 

In 2008, Dr. Vinayan received a one-year fellowship from the Epilepsy Society of Australia. The fellowship enabled him to complete an advanced training program in pediatric epilepsy at Westmead, Sydney.
 

“My areas of research include studying the interrelationship of epilepsy and other disorders of the developing brain like autism and learning disorders,” Dr. Vinayan shared.
 

Part of several international clinical trials and research projects, Dr. Vinayan has published research papers in various national and international journals.
