Research Workshop at Mysore

“Every project that strives to find solutions to local problems, results in the most fruitful research,” opined Dr. Shanthikumar V. Nair, Dean, Research, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Dr. Nair was addressing delegates at a workshop on Proposals, Research Methodologies and Publishing Papers, organized by the Department of Computer Science, Amrita School of Arts and Sciences at Mysore on Feb 26, 2010.

Research Workshop

The workshop was open to anyone interested in research and as such, was attended by over one hundred participants from various educational institutions in and around Mysore.

Dr. Nair appealed to these research aspirants to develop an inquisitive mindset and cultivate the open-mindedness required to go in for collaboration and partnership.

Emphasizing on the thrust laid on research at Amrita, he felt that Chancellor Amma had touched the institution with the wand of spirit needed for research.

The workshop, spread over four sessions, was meant to serve as an impetus for beginners to commence their research activities. It provided an exposure to the quality needed in research papers, if they are to be selected for publication.

Dr. Raghuveer, HOD, Dept. of Information Sciences and Engineering at the National Institute of Engineering in Mysore, was also a resource person who addressed the participants. While elaborating on various steps of research, he differentiated between ‘method’ and ‘methodology.’

Research Workshop

Dr. Raghuveer observed that in today’s world of information explosion, choosing the right facts from the vast ocean of information that was readily available was a real challenge.

“Many aspiring researchers find it difficult to choose a topic for research,” he observed. “Maybe it is possible to strike upon the limitations stated in earlier works and work on overcoming those limitations,” he counseled. “This could result in great research.”

Earlier, the Principal of the Amrita School of Arts and Sciences, Prof. H. V. Nagaraj had introduced the theme of the workshop, exhorting participants to make the best of this opportunity.
