This December, students studying in Standards X and XII across India, will have a unique opportunity. Together with their parents, they will be able to attend an educational camp to learn about various disciplines of study, including science, engineering, medicine, journalism, business and commerce.
The Sahavasa Camp for Education Orientation (SCEO’10), hosted by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham during December 29-30, will be free for participants; the first hundred applicants will be accepted. Registration forms are available for download from the institution website at http://amrita.edu/sceo/
“In our highly competitive educational scenario today, Standards X and XII present the most critical times for students as regards their future career choices,” explained the camp organizers. “Most often, children as well as their parents, are simply not aware of the broad spectrum of educational options available today.”
“As a result, many children end up enrolling in the wrong professional courses on account of extraneous compulsions rather than a genuine aptitude for that study. In the process, learning becomes joyless and talented children feel fettered with the courses they choose. Many thus fail to blossom to their true potential.”
Helping them blossom, the camp will also include exercises to identify latent talent. A briefing by noted educational columnist, Prof. B. S. Warrier will be followed by several other talks and interactive sessions, including those with Prof. K. Babu Joseph (Former VC, CUSAT) and Prof. Girija Vallablan, International School of Photonics, CUSAT.
Prof. M. P. Chandrasekharan, Dean, Amrita Schools of Engineering, will also interact with the students and their parents. Psychologist Prof. Chandraprasad Sreedhar will speak as well.
“We hope that the camp will help students correctly identify their aptitude and interests,” stated the organizers.
Last date for receiving completed application forms is December 15, 2010. Any student of Standards X and XII is eligible to apply. Students will be accepted only if accompanied by their parents.
Free accommodation and food will be provided by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Although there is no registration fee, a fully refundable fee of Rs. 300/- should be submitted with the application form. The fee will be reimbursed upon the completion of the camp.
