On February 23, 2024, students from Amrita School of Pharmacy visited the Marine Biodiversity Museum at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) in Ernakulam. The visit was organized by the Indian Pharmaceutical Association Kerala State Branch.
The visit commenced with a documentary showcasing CMFRI’s pioneering research in marine pharmacology, followed by a tour of the institute’s laboratory facilities. Students had the opportunity to learn about ongoing projects addressing antimicrobial resistance, anticancer research, and the innovative utilization of fish waste composite materials.
At the Marine Biodiversity Museum, the students observed a diverse collection of marineorganisms arranged systematically. Notable specimens such as Indian carrageen, paddle weed,and various fish species were on display, emphasizing the rich biodiversity of marineresources. Additionally, the discovery of 13 neutraceuticals from algae underscored theuntapped potential of marine organisms in pharmaceutical innovation.
The museum’s divisions provided insight into marine biodiversity, offering structuredlearning experiences in shellfish, marine biotechnology, and maritime artefacts. A visit to themarine aquarium allowed students to appreciate the beauty and complexity of marine lifeforms first-hand.
The visit also provided valuable insights into the production of nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticalsderived from marine sources, including medications targeting diabetes, hypercholesterolemia,hypertension, thyroid disorderand served as a catalyst for interdisciplinary learning andcollaboration among pharmacy students, inspiring a deeper appreciation for the potential ofmarine pharmacology in addressing healthcare challenges.
