Cow-kin: Smart and Precision Animal Farming for the Health and Welfare of the Cattle

Project Title: Cow-kin: Smart and Precision Animal Farming for the Health and Welfare of the Cattle

The project implements precision animal farming for cattle health and welfare. The Cow-Kin project includes a cyber-physical assessment system for cattle health vitals and robotic farm assistance, using Sony’s Spresense board. The project uses cow collars and a farm-assist rover to create a closed-loop system for precision farming.

The project on the cattle health and welfare monitoring for two phases was sanctioned by Sensing Solutions University Program (SSUP) of Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation and Sony India Software Centre Pvt. Ltd. since September 2022 – Rs.27,90,000/-

The objectives of the research:

  • Designing collars, exclusively for cattle, hosting a set of sensors for cattle health monitoring.
  • Understanding the power needs of the collar and employing energy harvesting solutions.
  • Identifying the cow uniquely in a herd and its fitness through image processing.
  • Correlating the data acquired from the collars using machine learning algorithms to customize the individual cow needs.
