Our research activities involve synthesis, characterization, modification, and applications of a variety of nanomaterials and nanocomposites

  • Synthesized nanomaterials include: carbon nanotubes, graphene, TiO2 nanostructures, bismuth nanohexagons, metal nanoparticles such as gold, silver, platinum, palladium, and zinc.
  • Graphene-TiO2 nanocomposites,, nanostructured iron oxides, and nanostructured aluminosilicates.
  • Methods of synthesis include: chemical vapor deposition, electrodeposition, hydrothermal and sol-gel.
  • These materials are being used in dye-sensitized solar cells, electrochemical sensors, and drug delivery.

Image Guided Drug Delivery: a Theranostic Tool

Biotechnology research work focuses on:  

  • Development of theranostic prodrugs, combines diagnosis and therapy to reduce the drug abuse, safety and precise treatment
  • Development of Molecular Sensors (Chemo-sensors & bio-sensors)
  • Development of MRI Contrast Agent involving gadolinium/manganese based T1 MR Contrast agent which can provide information on metabolic process
  • Other investigative work include: Peptide nucleic acids, medicinal chemistry and combinatorial chemistry.

Novel Concepts in Drug Delivery, Bio-sensing and Bio-Imaging

ELECTROCHEMICAL PROCESSING

Electrochemical processes have enabled a paradigm shift in chip making and it is expected to continue to enable further miniaturization of chip-package interconnects, microelectronic packages, printed circuit boards, MEMS, sensors and actuators. Expertise and facilities exist for conducting simulation as well as experimental investigation of electrochemical processes.
Our research focus areas are:

  • Electrodeposition and electroless deposition processes
  • High rate anodic dissolution processes and their application in electrochemical machining,  wet etching,  electropolishing and microfabrication  
  • Fabrication of prototype wafer-level electrochemical processing tool
  • Molecular Simulation

Research activities focus on development of materials and processes for microelectronic packaging and related areas. Extensive R&D expertise exists at ACIRI and plans are underway to work on major projects in these areas.   Research Topics include:

  • Advanced lead-free flip-chip (C4 solder) materials for customized applications including high power microelectronic and optoelectronic devices.
  • Precision joining of thin layers and structures for fabrication of devices such as MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems), microheat exchangers and microfluidics.
  • Development of metal-metal, metal-ceramic bonding processes

Electronic Materials & Structures with Tailored Properties

MICROHEAT EXCHANGE SYSYTEMS

Investigations in this area include design and development of microchannel cooling devices and compact integrated multiphase microchannel reactors. Key topics include:

  • Advanced liquid cooling systems for high power microprocessors and laser diodes.
  • Microchannel multi-phase reactor with orders of magnitude higher heat transfer capability than commercially available reactors.
  • A General Reactor Modeling Software to provide a single step solution for all types of Chemical Reactor Simulations.
