F1 TENTH Student Club

Sustainable Mobility and Automotive
Research Technology Centre

The F1TENTH Student Club at the SMART Center, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, is a multidisciplinary student research initiative dedicated to advancing autonomous racing technologies through hands-on learning, innovation, and competitive research.

The club provides a collaborative platform where undergraduate and postgraduate students work together to design, assemble, program, and evaluate a 1/10-scale autonomous race car based on the internationally recognized F1TENTH Autonomous Racing Platform. By integrating concepts from robotics, artificial intelligence, computer vision, embedded systems, control engineering, and autonomous navigation, students gain practical experience in developing complete autonomous driving solutions.

Research and Development Focus

The club actively develops and evaluates algorithms in the following areas:

  • Autonomous perception using LiDAR and vision sensors
  • Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)
  • Autonomous navigation and path planning
  • Obstacle detection and avoidance
  • Trajectory planning and motion planning
  • Vehicle control algorithms, including Pure Pursuit, Stanley Controller, LQR, and Model Predictive Control (MPC)
  • ROS 2-based autonomous software development and system integration
  • Simulation-based testing using the F1TENTH Gym environment

Vehicle Development

Beyond algorithm development, students are involved in the complete development lifecycle of the autonomous race vehicle, including:

  • Mechanical assembly of the F1TENTH platform
  • Sensor integration and calibration
  • Embedded computing system installation
  • Software-hardware integration
  • Performance evaluation and testing in simulation and real-world environments

This hands-on approach enables students to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical implementation while gaining valuable experience in robotics system engineering.

Competitions and Innovation

F1 TENTH Student Club

The club actively prepares student teams for participation in national and international F1TENTH Autonomous Racing Competitions, where teams compete by demonstrating high-speed autonomous navigation, robust perception, and intelligent decision-making capabilities.

Through technical workshops, coding sessions, simulation challenges, hardware integration activities, and collaborative research projects, the club promotes innovation and nurtures the next generation of engineers and researchers in autonomous vehicles and intelligent mobility.
